Did you know that there are seven common types of bite problems that occur in both children and adults? Most individuals are born with some type of bite that requires special orthodontic treatment. We’ve compiled a list of the top seven most common bite types that require treatment. Here they are!
1. Crossbite
A crossbite occurs when upper teeth fit inside of lower teeth. The cause of this type of bite can be a misalignment of teeth or of the bone. If not corrected this can often lead to jaw problems as well teeth being worn down quickly in the wrong places.
2. Crowding
Crowding occurs when there is not enough space for existing teeth. This can be a result of teeth that are too large or insufficient space in the jaw. If this is not corrected it can lead to frequent cavities as well as gum disease.
3. Deep bite
This type of bite occurs when the upper teeth cover the bottom teeth too much. If left untreated gum disease and early enamel wear may occur.
4. Underbite
An underbite is when the lower jaw sits in front of the upper jaw. This can lead to irregular face shape as well as excessive tooth wear.
5. Open bite
An open bite occurs when either front or back teeth do not touch with the opposing top/bottom teeth. This will leave a space that leads to swallowing problems as well as possible speech problems.
6. Protrusion
A protrusion is also known as “buck” teeth. This is often caused by the upper jaw being too far forward. Teeth tend to grow at an angle. This makes teeth more prone to chipping and/or excessive wear.
7. Spacing
Spacing occurs when there is too much space between teeth. It can be a result of missing teeth, undersized teeth, or sometimes a combination of both.
