We just recently had the pleasure of finishing up one of our favorite patient’s orthodontic treatment! Landon and his family came to us 26 months ago wanting to improve his smile. Landon had a severe deep overbite and about a centimeter of overjet. This means that his upper jaw was much larger than his lower jaw. We had discussed two options with Landon and his parents about how to fix his overbite. The first option was to extract two permanent premolars from Landon’s upper arch. This would allow for us to orthodontically bring Landon’s upper teeth back to meet his lower teeth. The second option was to surgically move Landon’s lower jaw forward to meet his upper jaw.

While deciding the best treatment plan for our patient’s Dr. Burke not only evaluates the patient’s teeth and jaws, but he also evaluates the patient’s facial features and profile. In Landon’s case because his lower jaw was already set back farther than his upper jaw, extracting upper teeth would cause his upper jaw to move back as well. This in turn would cause a distortion in Landon’s profile making his nose and eyes look much larger than his mouth and jaw, so for Landon jaw surgery was the best option.

We began Landon’s orthodontic treatment and started aligning his teeth to prepare for his surgery. When our patients need jaw surgery we have to make sure all the teeth are aligned and in the correct place before the surgery, this ensures that the surgeon can properly position the jaws to guarantee the best results for our patients.

After 20 months it was finally time for Landon’s surgery and it went off without a hitch. Landon now has the smile he has always dreamed of and we couldn’t be happier for him. We are going to miss seeing Landon in our office, but we are so grateful for the opportunity we had to get to know him and to help him on his orthodontic journey!
