Recently I saw something in one of my patients that blew me away! With his and his mother’s permission, I share the experience with you in hopes that you might see why it is so important for us to overcome the notion that we must wait until our children lose all their baby teeth before they have their first orthodontic evaluation.

We recommend that every child have their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. This may seem crazy, considering that a 7 year old child still has so many baby teeth. In fact, we only prescribe early braces (Phase I orthodontic treatment) in about 10% of 7-9 year old kids. Since a majority of the time orthodontic treatment is not needed in these youngsters, but close observation is important, we do complimentary check-ups every 6-12 months and take x-rays to make sure the jaws and teeth are growing and developing properly. This enables us to start treatment at the optimal time, which ultimately saves you time and money.

In this specific case, our patient came to us at age 8 for his first orthodontic evaluation. At this time, we were able to discover that he had what’s called an anterior crossbite, sometimes referred to as an underbite. The problem with an underbite is that it can cause tremendous damage to the front teeth in the form of wear and chipping, and it can even cause significant gingival recession (receding gums). Because of these problems, an anterior crossbite is one of about 7 conditions that justify Phase I treatment.

But, here’s the really cool part!!! – when Jonny came back to see me at age 11 and 1/2, to see if he needed a second phase of braces since all of his adult teeth were now in, his bite was perfect! His teeth that had come in after we finished Phase I could’ve used a little bit of further alignment, but neither he nor his mother were super interested in doing any further treatment if he didn’t really need it, and I was so excited to tell them that in fact he did not need it!

This is the perfect example of the benefit of scheduling an orthodontic evaluation for your 7-9 year old. Chances are all will be fine and we can wait a couple years until all the adult teeth come in. But, if your child has an orthodontic problem at a young age that requires Phase I braces, you will have the peace of mind that the problem can be corrected and any possible future treatment made much easier. Who knows, you may even be as lucky as Jonny and have no need for any future treatment!
