We are super excited to share this case with you!

Laura came to us when she was 17 years old. She told us that she didn’t like her smile and that she was unable to bite her front teeth together. These issues were caused by a prolonged thumb sucking habit from her childhood.

Thumb sucking in toddlers is very common. In fact, it is soothing and comforting and is perfectly fine as long as the habit doesn’t continue beyond approximately 5 years of age. After age 5, prolonged thumb/finger sucking can result in significant negative changes in the position of the teeth. If the habit continues beyond age 8, the growth of the jaws can actually be affected to the point to where braces alone will not fix the problem, but rather jaw surgery may be required to correct the smile and bite.

We told her that there was a chance that jaw surgery would be needed, however she agreed with us that we should try to avoid the surgery and correct her smile and bite with just braces. 1 upper permanent tooth from either side was extracted and she wore her braces for 24 months and 15 visits.

She was overjoyed when we removed her braces last week and saw her beautiful new smile! Now she smiles with confidence and, just as gratifying for Laura, now she is able to chew her food more effectively.
